What an IMEI can
and can't tell you.

What we can tell you

  • Exact make and model — including the regional variant, where the data has it.
  • Release year, so you know how old the phone really is rather than what a seller claims.
  • Whether the IMEI is even real. We check the built-in check digit, so a made-up or mistyped number is caught instead of quietly looked up as somebody else's phone.
  • Whether we buy it, and how to get an offer if we do.

What we won't pretend to tell you

  • Blacklist or stolen status. Not from an IMEI on its own — and the label answers a narrower question than people think. Find My switched off does not mean a phone is not stolen. It only means somebody signed out of it.
  • iCloud or Activation Lock. Apple keeps this inside its own service system, so an IMEI alone does not settle it.
  • Carrier lock status. That needs a live check against the carrier.

Want those checked properly? Bring the phone to 15300 Livernois and we'll run them in front of you, free, before you buy or sell anything. Or call (313) 340-9621.

Device list covers models released up to 2026. Brand-new releases can take a few weeks to appear — if yours isn't found, tell us and we'll add it.

When this matters

Check before
money changes hands.

01

Buying from a stranger

The listing says iPhone 15 Pro. The IMEI says iPhone 15. That is a different phone at a different price, and a thirty-second check. Do it before you hand over cash, not after.

02

Selling yours

Storage and exact model decide your offer more than condition does. Confirm which one you actually have so you are not quoting yourself the wrong tier.

03

Before a repair

A 15 and a 15 Pro do not take the same screen, and neither do a 16 and a 16 Plus. Confirm the exact model and we'll have the right part on the shelf before you walk in — most repairs are done within the hour.

Common questions

Answers before you ask.

How do I find my IMEI number?

Dial *#06# on the phone and it appears immediately. On an iPhone you can also look in Settings, then General, then About. It is printed on the original box too, and on the SIM tray of some models. An IMEI is always 15 digits.

What does an IMEI tell you?

It identifies the exact device. The first 8 digits are the Type Allocation Code, which specifies the make, model and often the regional variant — so it tells you what a phone really is, regardless of what a seller claims. The remaining digits identify that individual handset.

Can you check if a phone is blacklisted or stolen from the IMEI?

Not from a stored database, and nobody else can do it honestly either. Blacklist status changes constantly — a phone reported stolen this morning was clean last night — so any site showing you a saved answer is showing you a guess. A wrong "clean" is how people end up buying stolen phones in good faith. Bring the phone to 15300 Livernois Ave, Detroit and we will run a live check in front of you, free.

Can you check iCloud or Activation Lock with an IMEI?

Not from an IMEI on its own, and the label matters less than people think. Find My showing OFF does not mean a phone is not stolen — it only means somebody signed out of it. A phone showing it ON is just as often an honest seller who forgot. What actually settles it is having the handset in front of you and switching it on. Bring it to 15300 Livernois Ave, Detroit and we will do exactly that with you, free, in about a minute, before you buy or sell anything.

Is this IMEI checker really free?

Yes, with no signup, no credits and no paywall. We host the device database ourselves instead of paying an API per lookup, so it costs us nothing per check. We run it because people checking a phone are usually people about to buy or sell one, and we buy iPhones.

Why does it say my phone is not in the database?

Almost always because it is very new. Device codes get published after launch, at different speeds by different manufacturers, and some regional variants are never published at all. Call (313) 340-9621 or bring it in — we will identify it in person and add it so the next person gets an answer.

Is it safe to share my IMEI?

An IMEI on its own cannot be used to unlock, track or access your phone, and it is routinely given to carriers, insurers and buyers. We store only the first 8 digits, which identify the model rather than your individual handset. As with any identifier, do not post a full IMEI publicly alongside your name and address.

What is the difference between an IMEI and a serial number?

The IMEI identifies the phone on mobile networks and is standard across every manufacturer. The serial number is the manufacturer's own reference and is formatted differently by each brand. Carriers, insurers and blacklist databases all work from the IMEI.
