What an IMEI
actually tells you.

Fifteen digits, and the first eight do most of the work.

01

The first 8 digits identify the model

That block is the Type Allocation Code. It specifies the make, the exact model, and often which regional variant — which is how you confirm that a listing claiming to be an iPhone 15 Pro is not actually an iPhone 15. Different phone, different price.

02

The next 6 identify the handset

Those digits are unique to that individual device. They are what a carrier or an insurer uses to refer to your phone specifically rather than to the model.

03

The last digit is a checksum

Calculated from the other fourteen by the Luhn formula. It exists so a mistyped number is caught rather than silently looked up as somebody else’s phone. If the check digit does not match, there is a typo.

04

What it cannot tell you

Nothing about who owns it, where it is, or what is on it. An IMEI is not a tracking number and it is not a password. It also cannot settle on its own whether a handset was stolen — that depends on somebody having reported it.

Paste any IMEI into our free checker and you get the make, model and year back instantly, from a list of more than 250,000 devices we host ourselves.
