How to check a
used iPhone.

The same checks we run on every phone that comes over our counter. None of them takes long.

Before you hand over money, check:

  1. The IMEI matches the listing — a 15 and a 15 Pro are different phones.
  2. It is signed out of iCloud, with the passcode off.
  3. Battery health is above the 80s, or price the replacement in.
  4. Cameras, mics, speakers, buttons, Face ID and charging all work.
01

Confirm it is the phone advertised

Check the IMEI in Settings against the listing. A 15 and a 15 Pro are different phones at different prices, and this is the single most common gap between what is advertised and what turns up.

02

See it switched on and signed out

It must be signed out of iCloud with the passcode off. A phone still signed in is a phone you cannot use, and no amount of goodwill from the seller changes that afterwards.

03

Read the battery health

Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health & Charging. Anything in the 80s or below on a recent model means a replacement is coming, and that is a real cost you should be pricing in.

04

Test what people forget

Both cameras, the front and back mics, every speaker, all the buttons, Face ID, and charging. Five minutes of testing at the point of sale saves a fortnight of regret.
